Good morning Cougs. A quick post to start your week. Today we take a look at video of none other than Ferris QB Connor Halliday, the lone QB verbally committed to WSU for this upcoming signing class.
Halliday, as you'll see, has all the measurables. Good size at 6-5, a strong, accurate arm, excellent feet, and a really, really quick release. So quick, in fact, that Jason Gesser, doing the color commentary on FSN for the state 4A championship game, said Skyline's head coach told him that they wouldn't even try to blitz Halliday. He simply gets rid of the ball too fast for a blitz to be effective. However, he was under some pressure for most of the night, but that was based on Skyline's excellent surge by their defensive line.
And best of all, Halliday plays in your typical shotgun, spread-em-out offense with multiple WR sets, where he makes quick reads and gets it out fast. A lot of short throws into the flat, then taking shots down the field when the defense starts to cheat up.
Check out the video clip, after the read more......

Happy Sunday Cougs. A quick post to catch up on things after a somewhat wild weekend, so, here goes: Tough night for future Coug QB Connor Halliday. His numbers were pretty good, matching Jake Heaps yard-for-yard (254 from each QB). But Heaps would throw four TD's, all without an interception. While Halliday threw three TD's of his own, he did have two INT's. Skyline simply had too much for the Saxons, and pulled away for a 45-21 win. But you can't help but be impressed with Halliday based on what we saw last night. Strong arm, and as Jason Gesser pointed out in the pregame broadcast, outstanding footwork for a kid his size (6-5). I know Halliday isn't rated nearly as high as Heaps, heck, Heaps is the #1 rated QB on Scout.com, certainly one of the most coveted recruits in the history of Washington. But Halliday was impressive. We'll have some video of Halliday posted later today or tomorrow for your viewing pleasure (and no, it won't be a homebrew music video). I think you might like what you see. As Cougfan points out, Halliday had an amazing senior year. Over 4,000 yards passing (4177) with 43 TD's and 13 INT's? Good stuff. That said, on Heaps, NOW I get it. He does sort of look like Drew Brees in terms of stature, and he's pretty accurate. But that deep ball, WOW, it's a pretty thing. He threw a few of those lobs to Kasen Williams, the all-universe junior WR, and it was something else. He's got to be one of the greatest to ever play in the state, now three straight titles and a 40-2 record as a QB. That kid is going to be amazing in a west coast/BYU passing offense!
Moving on, tough one for the hoops team. 86-69 against a supremely athletic, high-pressure defense in Kansas State. I didn't watch much of the second half, but what I did see in the first half was enough for me. 6-for-23 shooting in that first half? 16 turnovers? A 7 1/2 minute stretch without a field goal??? YEESH. Combined with the way they played in the 2nd half vs. Gonzaga, even my untrained basketball eye can see that this young team is going to struggle with serious pressure. Klay looked flummoxed, to say the least, early on, with seven first-half turnovers and overall a 15-point performance that wasn't nearly enough. Maybe this is a good experience for him, in the end? That said, Chad Ford of ESPN Insider really likes Klay, labeling him "Stephen Curry, version 2." But maybe we're getting a little ahead of ourselves here. Maybe these last two games will quiet some of the worries about him jumping at the NBA after THIS season? Not that I know anything, but, Sutra has been telling me how much he needs to work on his handle, but he also seems to lack a little explosiveness in his first step or two. You can get away with that against the Onalaska Seawolves of the world, but it's a much different deal when facing your standard BCS-level competition! Moving on.....

Hello Followers. Hope you’ve had a good week.
Well, for me, bad news always seems to come in threes. Last night, it was that haunting Cougar loss to the Zags after whooping the kids from the kennel for 35 minutes. Then, it was the HORROR of watching the Beavs lose their Rose Bowl dreams for the second year in a row to their hated rivals (Imagine if we had lost 97 and then had 2002 eliminate us—but in back to back years!). Even worse, the Beavs have to live through the build up to the RoseBowl in their newspapers EVERY single day for the next four weeks!
Oh, the horror! Poor Bhagwan de Beevaire.
But the BIGGEST loss occurred when we lost to UCLA three weeks ago. With that blowout loss, I got torched in my bet with Theodore Miller as we fell mercilessly and hopelessly into the cellar, just as Ted predicted.
You see, two years ago, Ted and I placed a wager on whether or not we would finish in last place. I said that we’d finish 7th or better. Ted thought we’d finish tenth. So, after we nipped the Defeateds 16-13 in OT last season, we clinched 9th place.
And so, our bet became a push.
So, I foolishly decided in June to up the ante and doubled down—which was stupid because I never lost the first bet. Therefore, while I actually just re-upped my bet with him, it was nonetheless back on. And now, I am forced to stand before you, mocked by the very Cosmos I've created…..
In any case, Mr. Miller, please feel free to e-mail me at

attention the Coug-A-Sutra. At that point, in Tiger Woods clad privacy, we’ll figure out how I can get down to John McCain Way to clean your house, wash your cars, sleep on your sofa, eat your food, and be an all-around Biff to your impeccable McFly.
In the meantime, I want you and the world to know that I have NO illusions that we’ll compete for a bowl game next year. BUT, if Jake Locker goes pro (as he should), I’m completely poised to wager a TRIPLE axel, sow-cow (in Tanya Harding get-up) that we’ll beat the Huskies next year in Pullman.

But, in the end, and to quote Barry Gibb, I am left with such bitter sentiment.
“How can a loser ever win?” |

Editor's Note: This post is written by the Coug-A-Sutra's real life younger brother: The Bhagwan de (Oregon State University) Beevaire. Mr. Beevaire spent his formative years in the humble town of Corvallis, Oregon. Despite attending and graduating from the University of Oregon, the Bhagwan never strayed from his strong Beaver Backing roots, and within, never stopped hating the Ducks.
In preparation for today's epic battle for the roses, the Bhagwan de Beevaire heeded the summons of his older brother to run a bit of "Quack Smack" for the Cougar Faithful. We recommend that you read on.

Wow.
In spite of playing a fantastic basketball game for 35 minutes, our boys folded down the stretch and lost 74-69 to the Zags.
(This was a carbon copy of Gonzaga's loss to Michigan State, by the way)
This is one that we are really, really, REALLY going to want back not only tonight, but season's end.
Ah, the perils of youth.
Places for me where the game got away:
10:45 Second Half up 13. Miss on two threes that would have put us up 16--inlcuding a rim out by Moore. Then, after missing on our 3rd attempt to extend the lead, Harris scores on an "and one" and brings the game back to 10
7:02 Second Half up 6. Klay rims out a 3 from the baseline. If we get up 9 there, I don't think we lose.
4:20 Up 62-61. 3 straight turnovers, the last two of which were brutal. With Moore sitting by the scorers table, BONE SHOULD HAVE CALLED A TIMEOUT!
Finally, there's this thing called Free-Throw Shooting....
That said, despite getting bit by the youth factor, you have to love the upside of this team (who'd have thunk that we'd even be close with Klay Shooting 4 for 79?). Scrappy...Scrappy...Scrapy...
It will be great to see how we respond Saturday..
And despite screwing up by not calling a TO, Bone is a helluva coach... |
