WSU Recruiting Ranking Keeps Climbing
Written by Sean Hawkins

So we know that this year's Cougar recruiting class has been highly thought of within the WSU program.  Coach Wulff has stated on several occasions that this class "has the potential to be one of the best to ever come through Washington State", per his weekly radio show last fall.  Looking at some of the vitals on many of these kids, it's easy to understand the enthusiasm.  No lack of speed, size and athleticism in this group, a collection of versatile athletes headed for Pullman in a program that desperately needs layer after layer of young, athletic depth!

What's interesting though is the recent jump in the recruiting rankings.  I'm referring specifically to Scout.com, where the Cougs now sit at #35 in the country.  This is a class that was in the high 40's/low 50's nationally for several months, yet now today, they are #35 and ahead of other strong programs like Arizona, Cal and Oregon State.  This is foreign territory, and as the article points out, this class is on pace to finish as one of the highest rated in WSU history when signing day finally arrives.

But why the jump?  What exactly has changed in the last few months?  Did all these commits suddenly improve their games in December and early January?  Of course not.  Instead, it's safe to say that the biggest reason is simply because Scout.com and Cougfan.com have actually taken the time to review the tape of these WSU commits and analyzed their potential impact at the next level.  Unfortunately you can't always say that about some of the other recruiting services, where it's fairly typical to see a lower rating, and maybe even completely unranked altogether by the different sites, when it comes to WSU commitments.

One could argue that the higher ratings are given to BCS school recruits, simply because they are going to a BCS school.  Others might argue that some recruits are given an extra "star" by some of the sites in order to drive up their subscriptions for premium content.  Who knows if that's the case, and you hope things are on the up-and-up.  But I give Scout and Cougfan credit for taking the time to analyze the incoming talent and provide a realistic view of the class.  And in looking at their track record, it's again hard to argue their ability to figure out what kind of class is on the way:

2009: 43rd in the country in a year that saw several true frosh play immediately.  One of the most promising classes in some time, led by Jeff Tuel, Gino Simone, Travis Long, Brandon Rankin (*now enrolled).

2008tied for 74th.  Tough first class on paper for Wulff, who had roughly 6 weeks to put together a full class.  But some good depth has already emerged, like Louis Bland, Skyler Stormo, Mike Ledgerwood, etc.

200754th in the country.  Doba's last signing class, only a handful of players are left (Lobbestael, Mitz, Nwachukwu).  Highest rated player was Terry Mixon, the 5-star JC safety who never showed up.

200645th in the country.  Toby Turpin, Andy Mattingly and Kevin Kooyman were the most productive from this class, but several names on the list never made it or left very early.

Let's hope they can stay the course down the stretch, now less than 3 weeks until signing day.  The trends are good with Wulff's first two classes in terms of players getting to Pullman and, so far, the vast majority staying in the program and adding to the depth.  Help is already here, but it's clearly on the way as well!

Enjoy your morning, and as always, GO COUGS!

We also just landed the all time leader in HS field goals and are close to landing a great punter to replace Reid. Paul Sorensen had a great article showing what Wulff has been able to do at Eastern. He notes how three to four of the Eagles have a great shot at making at least a go of it in the NFL. These are guys that Wulff found to go to Eastern after the BCS schools passed on them. With the opportunity to play in the PAC10 how much better is Wulff going to do? There is light at the end of the tunnel.

There is a reason for the bump in recruiting. Nearly all of the wsu recruits did not receive any other offers from Pac-10 schools, so they only had 1-2 stars. Once a Pac-10 school offers a kid, Scout will bump them to a 2-3 star. Hence, the jump. Recruiting ratings really don't mean a lot.

UW has a great class this year, but do I think we have the #8 in the country? Probably not. It's all about filling in holes for the future. And, that's what she said.

Also, I'm shocked Fred Thompson ended up in Corvallis. I thought it was between UW and wsu.
Swapping Thompson and Mahoney for Buckley
written by Longball, January 19, 2010
Im with you Jason, didn't see that coming. Looks like OSU locked up Thompson AND Mahoney. That is some big time beef for their interior D. Also, back on campus, wayward former un-recruit Quayshawn Buckley. If he can actually qualify (is anyone holding their breath?) he could be the final piece this class needed. I hope he's cleaned up his facebook page, cause it didn't look too good.

Ok, so far Mahoney looks to be just a rumor. Every time I look at Scout there are new DT showing up with Wazzu offers, so the coaches are getting after it. Also, its nice we landed a kicker. I was starting to get a little worried about that.
Time is going to tell all

I agree that it is a little foolish to get too jacked on ratings. Clearly there are politics at play in some instances, and sometimes the people doing the evaluating may not have the right set of eyes to tell if a guy is a 4-star with promise or a 2-star with not much to offer. But that is the part of it that will always be an issue in these things. There are some people who aren't even sold on Jake Heaps, pointing out a lack of height or that in the biggest games vs top talent, he wasn't all that great, plus he had great wr's like Simone or Kasen Williams around him! I guess we'll find out. I do believe that today more than ever these recruiting sites are more dialed in, they watch film and do their homework more than ever before. So given where we are, plus the higher rating, this WSU class does have a ton of promise!

I think what should be looked at right now is not the total 'points' but the average stars per player. If you review that, UW is most likely going to end up 4th, and WSU most likely will end up 9th.

USC is 14th right now, but they only have 12 commits, their star ranking is 4.07, if they fill up their class, they Will be top 5 easy.

Wasn't it just pointed out that the star ratings are a joke?
Rating are subjective
written by BornCoug, January 19, 2010
They evaluate certain things but who knows how things will look 3-4 years down the line. We saw this with WSUs '99 class. Most services at the time had it in the top 30 classes and upper half of the conference. Three years down the line it probably would have rated even higher. There was hardly any attrition in that class and they really stuck together and blended well with the '98 and '00 classes.

The mostly 3-star classes are pretty difficult to evaluate. There are more variables in play for the typical 3-star player like their work ethic, getting them to the best position, and how long they are willing to stick with it.
Ratings are flawed
written by VikingCoug, January 19, 2010
I agree the ratings are flawed, but i do think our recruiting class looks really sharp. Also, how can you even try to rank players, QBs especially. Even a mediocre QB will play great with a strong offensive line and great receivers. The ranking of a QB is basically the ranking of their high school team.
High School
written by sdcoug09, January 19, 2010
Also, the thing with high school is that there can be such disparity regarding levels of talent in high school leagues because so much is based off enrollment and turnout numbers. One player on a high school team has the ability to completely dominate, one example is Oertel, while his numbers are good and is apparent he has talent, how different would it be if he played at bigger school against better opponents.
It is comforting to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel and we're not just being told that the incoming players will be good, but there may be some validity to it.
This class is good
written by BornCoug, January 20, 2010
I definitely think this class is one of the better we have seen at WSU if we are able to keep it together and get a few more players. Mahoney, Goggins, or both would cap off the class very well. Then hopefully one of the d-ends out there as well.

I really believe there are some very good Pac 10 starters in this class. Dunn, Cleveland, Ratliff, Rodgers, Halliday, and Galvin just to name a few of the offensive kids could end up impact players down the road. Bucannon and Oertel on the defensive side. There are also some good potential sleepers like Wilson, Fullington, Forde etc. that could end up starters a couple years down the road. Wilson looks like a Mylton Wynn-type of receiver that has the potential to cause huge matchup problems for dbs.

I really like this class if they can keep it together and close on the final 4 or 5 players they want in the class.
Rankings rose because players were evaluated
written by TiltingRight, January 20, 2010
They were 2* kids before, and after reviewing film, a LOT of them were bumped to 3*. There's only one kid in the class right now who hasn't been evaluated (Kristoff), though they've got video of him up, so I'd imagine it'll come soon.

One of the reasons we're ranked highly as a whole, though, is because our class is very full. Same with UW. Once the USCs and others that are competing for the last few 4 and 5* kids get their commits, we'll be dropping in the rankings.

Seeing the video of a lot of these guys, I'm pretty happy with the speed and athleticism coming in, regardless of the star ranking. BTW... Mark Ingram, Jr, Heisman Trophy Winner... was a 3 star prospect.
