Three Hits, One Miss for New WSU Enrollees

So the new semester kicked off in Pullman yesterday, and with that some good news on who made it to campus.  Defensive end Brandon Rankin (pictured, #90) is in, as are the JC offensive tackles in David Gonzales and Wade Jacobson.  The not-so-good news?  No Quayshawne Buckley.  Buckley was part of last year's signing class, and didn't initially qualify for admission.  There was some hope that he would make it this semester, but it didn't work out.  Now, it appears that Buckley is lost for good, as he claims that he is headed for Oregon State if/when he qualifies.  Disappointing on Buckley, but his loss does not overshadow the positive additions to the roster!

Rankin is the headliner and for good reason.  We've covered this ground before, but he could be an instant impact type defensive end.  It's a long way to go until September, but it is an exciting prospect to picture him opposite Travis Long at defensive end!  Both Gonzales and Jacobson will be in the mix for starting spots on the line, two more capable bodies for new O-line coach Steve Morton.  But even if they don't emerge as starters, they certainly figure to add much-needed depth up front.

And, there was more good news - Grippi's latest articles states that Toby Turpin and Kevin Norrell should be reinstated shortly.  We've heard good things on Norrell in the last month or so, and we should have some follow-up there after we get a few things cleared up.  But both Turpin and Norrell, if reinstated, are two more starters you can pencil into the pre-spring depth chart.

Anyway, all the way around a very positive day for WSU.  Enjoy your morning, and GO COUGS!

I know this may sound silly, but one of the posters over on the message boards at Cougfan says he Facebook messaged Quayshawne. Who in return said, here is my number, call me and I will explain everything. So the poster called him and the kid said he is still a Coug at heart, but basically no longer held a WSU offer.

I have heard a lot of the same stuff out there. I think the Cougs backed away from this one and that he still hasn't qualified.

Hey Lucas, if you're in town on Saturday give a holler. Hawk has my info.

I believe he reads this blog and I just wanted to give the kid a quick "kudos" for sticking it out. Can't wait to see you making plays on the field this fall.

Hey Longball,

Im actually going to be there only briefly. I am taking my Sales Manager and his son on a campus tour and then we're going to the game. We're getting in late on Friday and leaving after the game on Saturday. But I do believe I will be back in February, so for sure then.
Go K-rell !!!

Love the Facebook picture with him holding a 40oz. Real classy player we just missed out on.
All good

I like all the good news we keep getting, for a change. What I keep thinking is that the "lack of talent" issue (excuse) is steadily going away, so the pressure is getting greater for Wulff to prove he is the right guy.

BTW - I listened to the Pete Carroll press conf. in Seattle earlier. One thing I can say is "What the hell did I just hear?" I couldn't follow a lot of it because he wouldn't slow down and stop talking. He was very hyperactive. At one point he said something to the effect of how much he really liked the long answer he just gave. He sounds like a megalomaniac to me.

I love the idea of PC going to Seattle! He's going to suck there just as much as he sucked in the North East!
Best Status Update Ever

Wow, this status update is ridiculous from Quayshawne Buckley: "goodmorining weed . hello money. good bye coke"

Lane Kiffin to USC
written by stiffmiester, January 12, 2010
What a shocker. As if they don't already have the NCAA giving them a colonoscipy over recruiting violations. Could be the further demise of the boys from Troy.
USC
written by SeanHawk, January 12, 2010
You know, I think it is a damn good hire. Kiffin knows the west coast, he can recruit LA, heck they had Mark Tyler from USC on espn tonight and he said the players are thrilled because Kiffin recruited a ton of them! Then you find out he is bringing his dad for DC, Ed Orgeron, and now Norm Chow?? They are going to have a big-time staff, all with SC ties. They don't miss a beat with this hire. Before I thought Sarkisian was the perfect fit but Kiffin is even better.
Monte Kiffin
written by SeanHawk, January 12, 2010
Might look like I was saying his dad is Orgeron....of course, Monte Kiffin is Lane Kiffin's Dad!

One more thing- Kiffin's press conf tonight in Tennessee was a total joke! He said about 5 sentences and then left under a bunch of reporters yelling questions at him! Wow, Kiffin may not want to ever set foot in Tennessee again. They would clean him and fry him, KFC style!

Nevermind. I should have checked ESPN.com first.

They left out the part where he just walks off the podium and reporters are yelling questions at him! But there is just no way for it to end well, not after 1 season. He couldn't do a Pete Carroll and wax poetic about "the great year where we went 7-6!". smilies/wink.gif

Kiffin's a good hire. I was a bit shocked when I heard it, but the more I thought about it, the more it makes sense.

Re: Buckley and his FB pic and status update. IDGAF about a pic with alcohol in it. Not great judgment on his part, but I guarantee 90% of the underage players on our team every single year drink. And the post Soze referenced seems like a joke to me. Two of the comments below it clown him for it.

I get the impression it was all about the academics. If he makes the grade, I don't think Wulff and Co. walk away. Really too bad. For him, because he likely won't make it to OSU either, meaning he lost a year, and will have to go the JC route, and for us because we REALLY could have used him.

Wow, the Vols are steamed. Why didn't we think to deface the Victory Bell when Erickson, or Price or Bennet left? I guess we were all rioted out after 1998.

As far as Buckley goes keep in mind that besides upgrading the talent on this team, the staff is seriously trying to upgrade the character as well. They still take tons of heat every time a player gets a parking ticket, so no surprise they would back away from this kid. Not to mention, his academics are pretty sketchy and we've been down that road too. I say good luck at OSU, a stable program that can afford the risk, but it just isn't a good fit for us right now.
Good point Shaney

After the apr stuff, the off the field incidents, clearly they are weighing risk vs reward here, both in the classroom and out and about Pullman! I mean all kids are a risk, and you never know how a young man will react to going to school away from home. So high character matters, but especially so with this coaching staff.

When you can't qualify in almost 3 years and have drug related quotes on your Facebook... Wulff won't take you... morals...... have them or don't show up at WSU for football..
Mahoney
written by stiffmiester, January 13, 2010
With Kiffin buggin out on Tennessee Cougfan brings up a good point. Mahoney had Tennessee and WSU 1 and 1a for top schools. Wulff has an in home visit next week. Great timing and while it is a JC that gives us 2 years vs 3-4, it makes our defense look awfully intimidating next year. This is a get I want over Buckley by a country mile. He even said that if Kiffin came calling he would not put them at the top due chance to play.

Certainly doesn't hurt with Lame Kiffin out of there! We could use a JC DT as well. Might be a perfect fit after all!
