Blog Poll Monday, Week III

Good day Coug Nation.  I sincerely hope you all enjoyed the weekend.  Time to take a look around the WSU universe, plus review our weekly blog poll submission.  So let's go.

First, this was left in comments but thought it should be out there, as our own Kaddy was on the sideline for the SMU game.  Here's some of his report:

That was as much fun as I've ever had at a game. It was cloudy the whole game, but it was warm enough for shorts and a t-shirt.

These coaches have this team, as Hawk pointed out. When the O-line struggled, Etheridge was there, pumping them up, and Wulff came over, got on one knee, and every players' ears perked up and eyes focused on our coach. Wulff had a tremendous calm to him, and looked them all in the eyes, as he explained what they needed to do. Message received.

Ball and Levy are teachers, pure and simple. They never stop talking the players, after good plays and bad ones. Always positive.

I never realized how loud our crowd can be - even with 22,000. When Phase III is done, the environment and noise in Martin is going to be unconscious. No kidding. We're getting close...a little more money, and a few more luxury seats committed for, and we start building.

The sideline is awesome. If you ever have a chance to bid on sideline passes at an auction, I highly recommend it.

Thanks Kaddy.  I agree about the crowd noise, especially if you stand in front of the student section.  At the beginning of the Stanford game, we were on that side for the first series before we left the field, and man, it was loud.  Louder than you might think, even if it is a smallish crowd.

I know that people often question the fire and intensity of some of the coaches, even some complain that coach Wulff doesn't show enough jumping around and screaming at people.  But I don't know, it just doesn't seem his "way"?  There are coaches who are screamers, there are coaches who are middle of the road and get excited from time to time, and of course, there are coaches who wander the sidelines and look completely stoic while chaos happens all around them during the game.  I would put Wulff into the middle of the road, know what I mean?  I've seen him get upset, and we all saw the post-Apple Cup dance of pure joy.  But I like the idea of him being a rock, calm and cool during games and not losing it.  You want some emotion out of players, of course, and we want coaches to get fired up too, but there is a line in the sand that you don't necessarily want to see them cross.  I'm sure there are moments where coaches like Wulff want to go all Mike Stoops on people, but it's nice to see some restraint.

Anyway, great work Kaddy!  Those types of reports, even if it's just a few paragraphs, are always appreciated.  That goes for the rest of you too.  Have something you want to share, an at-the-scene report or some pictures or whatever, feel free to let us know and we're happy to make it part of a post.

Meanwhile, another week, another round of bumps-n-bruises.  This time, BJ Guerra is out 6-8 weeks with a sprained knee ligament.  Vince is reporting it to be 4-6 weeks, so we'll see how quickly he can bounce back.  At least it's not a torn ligament, which would surely end Guerra's season.  The line is going to be shuffled yet again this week, as Zach Williams is already out with his high ankle sprain suffered vs. Hawaii.  I know that there was some real sentiment towards seeing Jeff Tuel on Saturday, but Todd Sturdy said that they were concerned not so much with the game situation, but more so about the state of the offensive line!  They certainly don't want to get anyone's head knocked off back there, but to throw a true frosh into a competitive game with an already patchwork offensive line?  Didn't we already see what happens in this situation, like, oh, I don't know, LAST YEAR when we lost three QB's by early October?  I want to see Tuel too, believe me, but I want the kid to be upright after the experience!  He's a unique talent, a guy who many believe can be a real difference maker to a program, so let's hope they handle him the right way.

Read on for other stuff:

Grippi has a good rundown after Sunday's media report from coach Wulff.  Wulff stresses that they want to start better by simply relaxing, and that we are seeing the young kids far too tight to start games.  We touched on this on the Football Friday thing, about how slow we've been starting games going back to last year, but it's hard to argue with the numbers.  Of all the offensive TD's this season - five in three games - four of them have been in the second half (one vs. Stanford, two vs. Hawaii, one vs. SMU).  And clearly we've given up some huge points on defense in the first half as well - 22 vs. Stanford, 35 vs. Hawaii, 24 vs. SMU.  But at least vs. Hawaii and SMU, they have done some really good adjustments in keeping the points down in the second half.  In fact, in their last two games, WSU hasn't even given up a TD in the second half, just one one field goal vs. Hawaii, two field goals vs. SMU.  Interesting, no?

One last thing to take from Saturday?  And maybe this will help put things into perspective, but for much of the game on Saturday, the Cougs rolled with a three-man defensive line in that 3-3-5 defense to help slow the run-n-shoot.  But as Howie Stalwick reports, the three guys up front?  FROSH! Travis Long a true frosh at one end, Dan Spitz a redshirt frosh sliding out to the other defensive end, and Anthony Laurenzi, another redshirt frosh, playing nose tackle.  How many teams in the PAC-10, no, strike that, how many BCS teams in the country actually play an entire frosh defensive line?  Maybe in total/complete garbage time when the game is far out of reach, but wow.  We are young, young, young pretty much everywhere, and it's especially apparent up front!

Finally, the blog poll.

Last week's ballot

Dropped Out: Brigham Young (#9), Georgia Tech (#13), Utah (#14), Oregon State (#25).

Some movers-n-shakers in our little world include Cal and Ole Miss moving into the top five.  Miami took a huge jump based on their nice start, and after Florida State's whacking of BYU, Miami looks that much better.  BYU took a huge hit with their horrific blowout loss at home.

Of course, USC took a tumble, big-time, and Ohio State falls with them based on them losing to what looks like a very ordinary USC team right now.  Speaking of USC, 0-for-10 on 3rd downs vs. UW?  Three turnovers in the red zone?  Hard to beat anyone doing that.  And one more thing from that game - Why oh why did USC get away from the run?  Midway through the 2nd quarter, USC was up over 100 yards rushing and was getting five yards a pop on the ground.  Why go away from that, with your frosh QB making his first-ever start and have him throw so much?  There might be a little heat on Carroll this week, and for good reason.  But USC has some issues right now.  Not only were they missing Taylor Mays on defense, a huge loss especially on that last UW drive to get down the field so easily in crunch time, and they are young at QB and off to a slow start there.  But while they have a strong stable of all-everything running backs, is it me or are they lacking a serious deep threat right now?  Damian Williams is a fantastic WR and a major mismatch for anyone we'll trot out there to try and cover him on Saturday, but in the games I've seen from USC thus far, they are missing that home run threat who can stretch the field and open things up.  UW never had to worry about anyone getting loose behind them, so they could play tight up around the line of scrimmage and clog some of the short passing lanes.  We'll see what adjustments they make this week, and with their level of talent, there is a reason it's a 43-point line this week.  But still, something is missing in the land of Troy.

All for now.  As always, GO COUGS!

Last year against SC we didn't even try. It was awful. Will we at least try this year? I like the progress the team is making. Yeah, more wins would be nice, but I think we need to be happy with baby steps this year and possibly next. Stay the course with Wulff.
Poll Position
written by Coug-A-Sutra, September 21, 2009
This is NOT intended to be a slam toward Sean's solid top 25. But, after looking at the polls yesterday and Sean's today, I have one big fat question for you all?

WHY THE HELL DO PEOPLE HAVE OKLAHOMA IN THE TOP 10?

For me, the fact that the University of Clay Bennett is even sniffing the top 10 is EXACTLY why we shouldn't have polls until October 1.

I mean, how can a team that lost to BYU at home--which just gave up 54 to Florida State--be in front of a number of teams that have ZERO losses.

Hmm...

Anyhow, how many of you think that we might cover this week? The line is 43...

If we learned one thing this weekend, it’s that Coach Wulff absolutely DOES have this team believing in themselves, each other, the coaching staff and the program. I was texting back and forth with my sister as we both were watching the Huskies finish off USC. She stated that UW is for real, and that the loyal Husky fans were right to complain so bitterly about Willingham. I said that it’s amazing to see what happens when a team believes in itself. She said that’s what worries her about our Cougs (she too is Wazzu alum). I agreed.

After that 17 point comeback Saturday afternoon, I no longer have that worry. Some major strides were made Saturday afternoon, especially when one takes into account all of the youth on the field! Say what you will about the opponent, the sorry stats, appearing absolutely lost on both sides of the ball at times, at the end of the day this team of youngsters never stopped playing hard and believing that they could win.

I am extremely enthusiastic about the rest of the season. I’ll enjoy watching the maturation of our young players, even though it’ll likely result in some more lopsided losses. It doesn’t matter. What does matter is that this team of mostly Sophomores and RS Freshman are going to learn lessons the hard way, which are almost never forgotten. As the season progresses, maybe we’ll get to see these talented youngsters play without thinking, thus letting the talent (that is most definitely there) shine through. It may even result in an upset or two. Regardless, going through adversity together will only make this team stronger as the season progresses.

We are heading in the right direction.
Youth
written by Chris '04, September 21, 2009
I think the "youth" theme really came to a head in the second half when all three of our D-Lineman were either true Frosh or RS Frosh. Sometimes, it's hard to get a point across with no visual proof. But, there it was for all to see (~22,000 of us, anyway).

BTW, Brandon Jones is tiny. Very tiny. I'm not sure what he's listed at on the roster, but that dude is SMALL. Oh, and he gets burned A LOT.
Oklahoma

Still not sold on Wulff. I know we won and they played hard but the Mustangs gave that thing away. And while we are happy about keeping HI and SMU out of the end zone in the 2nd hlf what about the 1st halves? The run and shoot is a poor offense when you are way ahead and they never try to run clock. That is all that was. We won't win another this year but ok I am coming around to the idea of cheering on the little things. That is all there is now.

And to the other guy the BYU loss was on a neutral field and the team was in shock losing Bradford yet they still almost won it. Oklahoma gets the benefits of being Oklahoma but recognized as a top 10 team by all the pundits. They will be there in the end.

Well USC gave the game to UW with the turnovers as well, but it is still a W regardless. This game shows without a doubt that Wulff and Co have these kids. No if we could not think so much in the first half of games and just play!
43pts??

Wow, I might have to go down to local sports book here in Reno, NV and take the Cougs +43.....last year we would not have covered but this season, I just do not see us getting blown out by 7 scores....even in LA - and Troy does not look as forminable this year.....

So I wonder what the spread is on UW @ Stanford?.....I bet all the Huskies are now predicting an easy win vs the Trees but I think Stanford will give them everything they can handle and then some......what is the word on the streets up there in pacific northwest?...I know I have already received a few emails from Husky friends who are shooting off their mouths like this is the 1991 Husky team that tied Miami for co-national championship? But I guess what if?...that UW/CAL game on 12/5 could be huge huh?

Looking at the schedule and our inclination to rack up injuries early in the season, why do we not try to get two byes a season??.....the USCs, UWs, CALs, etc. all do this....anyway, just thinking to myself while looking at the schedule with helmets in my office here at work smilies/wink.gif

No surprise that the UW fans are shooting off their mouths. They already were after they beat Idaho, but now they beat USC and are ranked! I understand their excitement, especially considering that they were one of the worst teams in the Pac 10 over the past decade. But they just pound their chest a little too loud for my taste. Go over to the Seattle PI site and look a the garbage they are spewing there. Instead of enjoying their turnaround, they are talking crap about how WSU should just get out of the Pac-10 and move to the WAC or another non-BCS conference. There are some decent UW fans out there, but there are also some of the biggest a-hole douchebags that I have ever come across.
I think it is time for the Dawgs to get a reminder that they were WINLESS last year...that comes this weekend, hopefully.

Sometimes it is nice to live down here in Nevada removed from the day-to-day husky/cougar rivalry...however I always find when the Huskies enjoy success, they use it to give us Cougs some backhanded insult - why can't they just enjoy their upset without having to somehow transition to WSU bashing?...one major win and now we deserve to be in the WAC.....I still do not think they can even talk until they win an apple cup.....but man long season left for them at Stanford, at Notre Dame, at Oregon St, Oregon, CAL, Arizona, etc - lets see if Locker is even healthy by the apple cup the way he throws his body around? I seriously do not think he will make it to November.......then where will the pups be?

Billy,

I agree with ya…I always thought that “WSU wasn’t even a blip” on UW’s radar, that “Oregon is their true rival”…yet a lot of Husky fans still find a way to be insulting to WSU without being provoked. Although, maybe I shouldn’t say unprovoked…far too many Cougs are constantly using UW as a measuring stick. Its no wonder many Huskies tell us we have “little brother” syndrome. Sometimes I wish that our fan base would just focus their attention on us and not worry about what the program in Seattle is doing all of the time.

That being said, you’re right, it is a long season, and UW does have quite the gauntlet to run through in the coming weeks. It’ll be interesting to see how they handle the challenges ahead. However, nothing can diminish the win over SC on Saturday and only the biggest WSU honk would deny that Sark seems to be a pretty darn good coach.

I for one could care less what the UW does on the field or off. The only time they matter to me is when we meet once a year. It is surprising that they lost EVERY game last year and have seemingly turned it around. That is a pretty graphic indictment of how bad a coach Ty was. I was sorry to see him go!

Well I just hope Wulff utilizes the formula UW used in their upset of USC...maybe we can borrow some strategies??

....it makes me wonder is UW really vastly improved or did Sark really have this enormous inside advantage in playing against his former team? Is Locker & Sark really the difference between 0-12 and a possible bowl team? Anyway, still can't believe they won...

So, is Lopina better suited to keep us competitive with USC than M-Lob? Do we need to have a mobile QB to stay within the point spread?....yeah I agree with a lot of you, might not be Tuel time this week.....I am thinking ASU at home smilies/wink.gif

Finally, anyone know which USC QB is gonna play?...I can't imagine them rushing back their 1st stringer (his name escapes me) to play us at home?

The only way the Cougs are going to break the 'cycle of football poverty' is to begin playing greater than the sum of their parts. Boise State, Navy, Utah, Oregon State etc. all had to work with less than blue chip talent but eventually developed winners. CPW may be on the verge of attaining this level of play from this group but a few key players/positions must take it to the next level. Loebbenstel in particular is key - both passing and in particular running. Additionally, execution is getting better but it is in no way crisp and that is what is required for 60 minutes in order for this team to succeed. I believe we are getting close and that a one win season is not guaranteed - we will surprise some teams. Confidence and momentum will take root and the seeds of long term success will be planted. Like the tenacious scrappy short kid who gets in a school yard fight with a big guy we need to keep getting up, hit hard and bloody noses. Eventually even big guys fall. Go Cougs!

I opine that the term papers writing seems to be the most time consuming issue. Nevertheless, people rely on the essay writing service support every time when it's demanded.
