Talking Irish-Cougs with Subway Domer

Good afternoon Cougs.  Just a couple of more days from right about now and we'll almost be at kickoff.  Is it me, or has this been a LONG week?  Anyway, today, we have another feature, doing that Q&A blog thing again.  Yesterday was NBC, today we roll with Bloguin's own Subway Domer.  The Domer runs a good Irish site, constantly updating the Bloguin community on all things Notre Dame.  Longball weighed in on the Cougar questions, and you can find them here over at SubwayDomer.com

Want to know even MORE about Notre Dame on Saturday?  Continue on....

1) Notre Dame's offense has been strong through the air, as Jimmy Clausen is on just about every Heisman list out there.  But what's with the running game at 76th in the country?  Is it much of a concern, or is it that the passing game is so strong that it really hasn't been an issue this year?

Domer:  The running game is actually doing what it is supposed to do. While the running game is ranked 76th, as you stated, the total offense is ranked #15. The running game is used to set up the pass and add balance to what is one of the best passing offenses in the country.
Some Irish fans are screaming for more production out of the running game- as if 200 yards a game is really necessary for this team to score points. We pass the ball well, but Armando Allen and Robert Hughes have done pretty much everything that I have expected them to. And besides- we have had too many close games with little time left to rack up "junk" yards on the ground.

2) Kyle Rudolph is off to a great start this year, one of the best young tight-ends in the country.  His near-TD catch vs. USC was a sight to behold.  I know it's early, but, where do Irish fans see Rudolph in the grand scheme of Notre Dame football history?  Are we looking at one of the best to ever play the position in South Bend?

Domer:  I feel that Rudolph is probably going to go down as the best TE in Irish history- but with an asterisk. I doubt he will match the stats of former Irish greats Ken MacAfee and Jim Seymour, but those were players from an era where they were THE number one target. Rudolph has guys like Floyd, Tate, Prater (getting ahead of myself), around him to take a lot of balls.
But, to reiterate- I think he is not only will be one of the greatest ever in South Bend, but there is a league called the NFL, that is drooling to get him there as quickly as possible.

3) Notre Dame ranks pretty low in total defense, now 97th in the country.  What's going on there?  And what kind of defensive schemes can WSU expect to see on Saturday?  Will they throw the kitchen sink at young Jeff Tuel?

Domer:  A lot of things are not going on. There are many, many possible reasons why the defense is playing so poorly- but the fact of the matter is, is that they are giving up way too many big plays. This is largely due to 4 things:
  • A less than stellar pass rush. The blitz is getting home... a half second late.
  • Poor safety play- period. One is rolled up against the run (which BTW- the run defense is much improved, since the Michigan game). The other is lost in space, floating 15 yards away from the play.
  • Bad tackling- which has improved with the addition of Te'o as a full-time starter and better technique emphasised in practice.
  • The corners are giving more cushion than they probably need- but since there is a small pass rush, no safety help, and worried that the running back may break through the front 7, well you get the point.
You will get blitzed. You will see Harrison Smith jump in the air coming off of the edge 12 times. But, you will also see Manti Te'o go insane, Incredible Hulk style.

4) Linebacker Manti Te'o was a huge recruit "win" for Charlie Weis last year, one of the most heralded linebackers in the country.  What is the buzz so far on him?  Does he look like the real thing, or is it simply too early to tell?

Domer:  Didn't i just say something about Te'o? Hmm... interesting. I personally feel that he was promoted a little late. He tackles through people. He is an incredible specimen, and if he stays at ND instead of going on a mission, he will be an All-American next year. Seriously.

5) Finally, prediction time.  What are the odds the Irish JUST MIGHT overlook little 'ol WSU??  Does this have any feel whatsoever of a "trap" game for the Irish? What happens on Saturday??

Domer:  Notre Dame is a different breed of program. ND gets every teams best shot every week. It is just different. Because of this, they generally don't "look past teams," but they do have a tendency to play down to the competition. I'm a betting man, and I would bet that ND does not come close to covering the spread. Well, maybe close- but they won't win by 30. I'm guessing: IRISH 42-13. OK so maybe it's a push.

Thanks to the Domer for the info.  I think we've learned enough about the Irish this week, don't you?  I think we're ready to get this thing on.

GO COUGS!

If there is ONE game that we I wish we would just play over our heads and win this year (other than the Apple Cup), this is it. Nothing would be better than shoving a big fat L down the gullet of that obese, arrogant, pompous a-hole Weis.
Really?

You hate Weis that much as a WSU fan? You have some serious anger issues. I'm all for hating the other coach- but I rather it be a head coach that we play against on a yearly, or even semi-yearly basis.
Hmm.
Hey Subway Domer

WSU fan or not a lot of people do not like Weis outside the friendly confines of Notre Dame. This cannot be the first you have heard of this?
Of course not...

I just find it odd, that's all. Weis is a very charitable person who does a lot of good things for others. The media and the overall hatred of ND throughout the country has created a frenzy against one man because of what team he coaches.

I just find it odd. That's all. I expect this from Michigan and Trojan fans, because that's what you say against bitter rivals. But for fans of programs that are not going anywhere, it just comes off wrong.

I mean NO disrespect to WSU, because I have no reason to disrespect them. I guess, well... I find it odd.
It's Notre Dame

I beckon it's less to do with Weiss, more to do with Notre Dame. It has more to do with the love/hate relationship people have with the storied program. Being Irish and Catholic I've always cheered for the program, whereas a lot of people simply don't like the "haves" of college football (NBC, recruiting, $$$). That being said, I'm hoping the Cougs can compete with Clausen and Co.

It actually has to do more with Weis than Notre Dame. It goes back to his days in new England. I don't have anger issues. Well, not too bad anyway! His little comment about getting his 3rd and 4th string oline some playing time also rubbed me the wrong way a bit.
Arrogance

The thing that I don't like about Charlie is that he is one arrogant S.O.B about football stuff and yet has absolutely nothing to show for it as a head man.

For instance, his play calling against Michigan cost ND a game that they had in the bag. And how about the play calling against SC????--3 and goal from the 4 and he calls an "in" route to the 3 yard line. IF the WR had caught that ankle bullet that Clausen threw, the game would have been lost. HORRIBLE play call and horrible read.

Then on fourth down, in spite of having 10 years to make a great play call while the previous play was under review, he cluster-f's the left side of the field and Clausen throws the ball away.

So ya, Weiss has been great to that BC kid and has done some nice things for the greater South Bend community. But heck, what else is he gonna do with that fat contract--eat more bags of Cheetos??

Simply put, its easy to resent someone who acts as if they're the best thing ever, when they haven't shown that they are.

I just wish someone would give Weis some kleenex during games. Christ, his halftime and postgame interviews make me want to vomit with the snot on his upper lip.
Kleenex

I actually second that. Makes HD undesirable.
Agree Weis is arrogant, but...

I don't question the playcalling at either Michigan or USC.

At Michigan ND had to get 1 first down to win the game. Armando Allen, who was playing great that day was hurt. On first down, Robert Hughes got stuffed, like he had been all day. Hughes was not going to get a first down against a Michigan D playing the run. So second down he called a pass and Clausen saw Tate one on one against the defender. He immediately went to Tate, and if you re-watch the play it was clearly pass int on the D. On third down Michigan went to their soft cover two. The play here is to throw the out route against Cissoko (who has subsequently been kicked off the team) because he couldn't cover anyone. This play was wide open, but because Floyd was hurt, the freshman Shaq Evans came out of his break late and ran a terrible route. Incomplete pass, punt. Running three times and punting would have had the same result and everyone would have said he played it too conservative. I'd always rather be more aggressive in that situation, sometimes it backfires (i.e. USC vs Texas in the Rose Bowl.)

Against USC the first slant was not Charlie's fault. The play is a fade/slant. The offense guessed that USC would play the fade to Tate, but they jumped the slant and it was an incomplete pass. The fourth down play was the play that could have won the game. It was an over/under play similar to what they ran against Purdue to win the game. Watch the play again, Kamara slips coming out of his break. If he had planted and stayed on his feet the ball would have hit him right in the chest.

Neither of these situations are Charlie's fault. He's made some bad decisions this year, but those play calls were not them.

I don't hate ND. The fans, except for one idiot, were very gracious when I attended the game in South Bend. I'm no fan of Weiss, but I don't hold it against the team.
