Down the Stretch
Written by Sean Hawkins

So we're finally in the home stretch of 2009.  The finishing kick to a one-win season, one that has seen some improvements here and there, yet still, so much ground to cover.  There's some debate out there right now about the improvement this year, or lack of, that has a columnist who covers the team on a daily basis openly questioning just how long this thing is going to take.

I can't help but agree with much of what Howie Stalwick has to say.  After all, he's got first-hand access to everything that's going on, the "source material" if you will.  He has witnessed more than any of us in the blogosphere care to see, all the fall camp practices and such, and so he has some weight behind his assessment of where things are right now.  While Stalwick harps on the usual can't-win-without-talent argument, one that I wholeheartedly agree with, well, the coaches don't exactly come off completely clean here either:

Do Wulff and his assistants get a free pass for the disastrous results of the past two years? Of course not. Last year, they tried to force-feed too much too soon on confused and frustrated players. This season, they refused to play Jeff Tuel — the best quarterback on the team, without question, from the first day of fall camp to the last — until the fourth game.

Yeah, yeah, we know — they wanted to redshirt Tuel, a true freshman. Well, they stayed with that plan for two whole games (although Tuel did not play for another week after that).

Sorry, but Tuel did not magically improve while carrying a clipboard the first two games. Nor did early starters Kevin Lopina and Marshall Lobbestael suddenly take drastic steps backward.

See, there's blame to go around, above and beyond just the lack of talent.  Wulff has admitted earlier this summer that perhaps they tried to throw too much, too soon at players who just weren't ready for it in 2008.  But I seem to recall they threw out the no-huddle completely by the end of the first month of the season, so I guess they did at least try to "dumb things down" a bit?

Anyway, just how much can be laid at the feet of the coaches is obviously debatable.  A great coach doesn't make a player suddenly run faster or jump higher or even lift more weight, although all reports are that the current strength program is absolutely fantastic in terms of packing on the beef.  But anyone can look at the collection of talent Pete Carroll has managed to amass in his time at SC and realize that talent matters a helluva lot!  Or you can go look at the programs that have been putting players in the NFL draft the last several years.

Think it's any coincidence USC has had SIXTY players drafted into the NFL the last 10 years, tops in the conference?  Or how about our 0-fer friends in Montlake, with ZERO draftees the last two years?  Think that lack of talent that can play on Sundays had anything to do with 0-12 last year?  For what it's worth, UW is 9th in the conference with just 19 players picked the last 10 years.....but can you guess who's last?  This one's a layup.  Yep, WSU.  17 players the last 10 years taken in the draft, just six taken on the first day. And the only first round pick?  Marcus Trufant, 2003.  That's it folks.

As a fan and blogger, I am hopeful that this thing will turn around.  I mean why would I want for anything else?  Would we at this blog even be here, right now, if we didn't care beyond belief that things will turn around with this crew?  We all want the same thing, and that is a return to respectability and hey, have some fun watching our team get better.  A football program that not only has high-character student athletes who make great decisions on and off the field, but one that competes like crazy every Saturday and factors into the bowl conversation.  We care about the team because, well, it's a part of us, a small extension of who we are.  Most likely, you follow the team and read this kind of stuff because of your association with the Cougs, in one form or another.  WSU is not your standard t-shirt school, I think we can all agree on that.  Beyond the flag-waving on ESPN Gameday, well, they don't exactly move the needle on a national level.  But whatever.  Maybe you are a grad/alum, maybe you just went to school there for a few years, maybe you are a parent of a player or have a sibling that played at WSU.  Or maybe you grew up in Pullman and knew the fight song since birth.  Whatever your reason(s), you feel a sense of ownership in your college team, because you have poured yourself into something WSU-related.  Whether you admit it or not, it is part of who you are.  So there.

I hope this final month sees some surprises.  I hope we sneak up on some team who clearly doesn't care to play us right now.  I hope, as Ted Miller suggested last month, that "WSU punches some unsuspecting team in the mouth."  I hope......

Moving on, much has been made about the lack of quality Pac-10 athletes in the upperclassmen division of the roster, blah blah blah.  Once again, it's crystal clear when you look at the depth chart this week.  Youth, youth, everywhere it's youth.  And with this week's release, some startling numbers in regards to the kids. Did you know:
  • Through the first eight games, 19 Cougars have made their first career starts, six on offense and 13 on defense. In 2008 26 players registered their first start for WSU, 17 on offense and nine on defense.
  • Through the first eight games of the 2009 season, the Cougars have been hit hard by the injury bug, particularly on the offensive and defensive lines. So far this season WSU has missed 64 player games due to injury or illness. On the offensive line five players who have started this season have 17 missed games due to injury, while the defensive line has missed a total of 14 games from five players.
  • 10 freshman have started games this year.  The last time 10 frosh started in a season?  The year 2000.  Yep, 2000.  That was the team that went 4-7 with three OT losses, and you saw the promise.  And we all know what that group of frosh from 2000 accomplished in 2001-2003.  Perhaps that is, in fact, light at the end of the tunnel?
Anyway, wow.  That's not just excuse-making.  That's a young and beat up football team!

That's about it for now.  Enjoy your morning, and GO COUGS!

Thanks for depressing me even more. I don't think you can compare the youth of this team to that of 2000. Like you pointed out, that team was 4-7 WITH 3 OT losses. On top of that, we haven't seen very much promise either, other than our team not laying down. When we actually play a competitive game, then I guess we will have seen some promise. I'm going to the UCLA game, even though I dread that it will be the same story. No matter what happens....GO COUGS!!
Depression not the idea Yak

The idea is to look at where we are as a problem on many levels, but hold out hope for the future. But there is no question that group from 1999-2000 was awfully special. I think this group we have right now has serious potential, maybe not on that 1999-2000 group but certainly above the norm.

I know what you are saying. I was being a smartass. I am concerned about how young we will still be next year. But more than that, I am getting concerned with our coaching as well. I want Wulff to succeed, I really do. The guy has had a lot of tragedy in his life, and you can't help but root for the guy...and he is a COUG!! I know that we have had a rash of injuries on the oline, and we have a true frosh QB. But the performance of the O in San Antonio really left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. Maybe more of the blame should be laid on Sturdy? I don't know. With as young and green as we are, we have to have coaches who will put us in the best position to compete. I don't think we have seen it. Our D, despite the yards and point allowed, has improved. It isn't all their fault that they are on the field for 40 minutes a game. The big picture is hard to judge at this point. One well played game from start to finish would go a long way.

I'll be at the UCLA game - looking forward to it. Also plan to catch the hoops game this coming Monday in Pullman.

Lets hope they will improve next year. Also, hopefully Wulff's recruits are able to stay around longer than Doba's. It doesn't look like he has had much of a problem with that though. These coaches are recruiting as hard as they can right now. If Wulff is able to prove himself as a coach, the recruiting will only get better. I do wonder though why the offense was not able to do anything against the rush from ND last Saturday. I'll be happy with a 5 - 7 team next year, making a bowl game would be awesome though.

I think 5-7 next year would be a massive accomplishment, seeing where we are now. I hope you are right. I thought that we would win at least 3-4 games this year. One of these days I know we will just finally click...let it be vs. UCLA!!!

Fantastic job Sean. I have a step daughter at WSU right now and have to admit the Cougars are one thing we connect on. If any of you have teenage or college age step daughters you may understand how difficult it can be to find something to connect with. There is some ownership by fans, whether it is realistic or not. I think college sports are the one sport where you hear us say more we vs. they and that is a big reason. On the field I was furious at the offense for most of the night but after sleeping it off I realize the big picture once again and you have made me see this. And the end of shawshank redemption picture is a great frame of reference. Man-tears every time I see it.

Thanks for the perspective.

Anyone down here going to the Town Hall meeting this Thursday at the Rose Garden? It's at 6pm.

I'll be there - bringing a friend or two, as well.
Thanks Portland

Shawhank is unbelievable. No teenage/college age daughters here (thank God!) but hey man, whatever binds you together, right?

Yak, I am with you on the wins next year. 5-7 seems like a stretch at this point, especially opening at Okie State and then going back down for SMU (unless they change the schedule, which is rumored with Montana State, etc?) It's awfully early to do this, but, the 3-4 neighborhood might be much more realistic. Frustrating, I know.

But it's not just us who are in that slow rebuilding boat. Look how long it took Stoops at AZ to finally get to a bowl game (2004-2005-2006-2007, only finally getting there last year in 0smilies/cool.gif. Look at how far Stanford has come under Harbaugh, but even now, they are in his third year and still haven't clinched a bowl bid just yet at 5-3. And oh yeah, they still have Oregon, @USC, Cal and Notre Dame on their schedule. They might not even make it! Just goes to show that it is TOUGH as hell to get back to where we used to be in the Pac-10. It's dog eat dog.

Coaching

Gotta say I share your sentiments about the coaching situation. When I first heard about the "undecided" nature of starting Lops vs. Lobs I think my neighbors thought someone was dying next door. I also thought they should have started Tuel right away (but then again, I never saw a practice, so I don't know). I've brought up the subject of whether the assistants are of the right caliber for the PX on that other website, and got blasted by other posters, one who literally told me to "get lost".

I don't think our staff has made good decisions, but I understand they are growing and learning too, I just hope they get better along with the players.
Stay realistic and Positive

My first entry into this blog. I have a son who attends WSU and have been following the Cougs since he was a freshman 3 years ago. He was a finalist in the walk on QB tryout last year and got to know the coaches a little. Good impression from them and I hope they turn this thing around, maybe we need a touch of patience. Anyway, I have really enjoyed reading this site and am truly impressed with all the emotion and care displayed by all sides of the current situation. We all can agree that Pullman is a special place and provides a fantastic traditional college experience . I have heard all the challenges including recruiting, coaching, financial constrains and all the rest that make it difficult for Pullman to consistently field a competitive team. So then, how has Boise managed to do it? The campus is not nearly as beautiful and the budget I imagine is smaller. Yeah, I know, week in week out easier schedule........but for the last 6 or so years with a lower budget they seem to get the job done. Is it Juco's, lower GPA reqmts or just recruiting and coaching the right kind of players. Anyway keep up the good work (Sean, Kaddy and all the rest.) By the way, we live within a mile of Stanford and their facilities at least with regard to football (weight room, lockers...etc) are pretty much the same. They do have a larger practice filed however but the campus is very spread out and lacks the college character in Pullman.
Hey guess what!? I have a solution!!!

Fire Paul Wulff! He immediately made an average Doba team horrible with the same talent that Doba went .500 with. Should say something to you. Wulff is doing fine in recruting, but clearly his x's and o's are horrible, something most people don't even consider. It's not just motivating and recruiting, you gotta have good schemes and knowledge!!!
Thank you Nathan20

For being the poster child off all that is wrong in Cougar Fanland. Don't forget to slit your wrists on the way out.

Wrong Nathan...

Doba had the talent that was left over when Price left. He left Wulff with no such advantage. That is not Wulff's fault.

However, how much improvement is there REALLY from year to year is my main issue. I understand, especially with QBs, that learning the system is valuable, but I'm unsure how much impact a lot of these guys will really have. I just forsee a possibility of us drastically improving...then getting burned anyway by the blue chip recruits USC and ORegon bring in on pure talent.

I understand we are improving and I SEE improvement, but how much upside are we looking at here? Are we really improving enough to field a competitive Division I football team in the near future?

Trying to stay positive but that was the hardest game I've had to watch in a LONG time...
oops...norcal

Sorry about that, I guess I missed the fact that Galvin is from the Bay Area, so I guess I should have said Speedy RB from Norcal!
Nice post Cyber...and bad post Nathan
written by Yakicoug, November 04, 2009
Right there with you on your concerns Cyber....but SC, Oregon and others have always brought in Blue Chippers and we still competed...it takes bringing in the right "kind" of players into the right system. Hopefully we have the right system. They are certainly recruiting SPEED in the 09' & 10' classes. Back in the Palouse Posse days that is what this team was built on.
Nathan- Wulff is not getting fired. At least not for another couple of years if things don't turn around. Firing him now would be a monumental error and only set this program back even further. We've got to let Wulff see his 09' class become juniors and seniors, then see what we've got.

Pullman is an amazing place to go to college and a great place to go back and watch games, even if it is hard to get to.

As to your Boise State comparison, look at when they made an upswing, it is in direct correlation to when WSU went down hill. Pflugrad and Doba (who admitted this) stopped going for the usual diamond in the rough kids and thought they could go toe to toe with USC and others. They didn't win these battles and had to settle for whoever they could get at the last minute. Those diamond in the rough, high character, hard working kids had already committed to Boise State and Oregon State by this time, leaving WSU to all the academic risks and problem children who have long since flunked out. I really think both Boise State and even Oregon State to a lesser extent greatly benefitted from WSU's change of focus and resulting failure.

Wulff's staff has gone back to the old style of recruiting and they seem to be doing a pretty good job, but it is an uphill battle, especially with the success of the other schools who are using this same strategy.

I don't think that post is worthy of "slitting my wrists." We were an average pac 10 team in Doba's last year (5 years after Price left I should note) and when Wulff came we were all the sudden losing by 60! It just doesn't add up... I am rooting for the cougs as always, and I really would like Wulff to succeed ireally do, especially with his tragic losses of multiple family members, but I have to be honest... I just don't think the guy can coach... it's just my opinion and I'm sorry if that pisses all you guys off for sharing it.
The Band on the Titanic

To some of us the ship is righting itself (complete denial) to others its hang the captain,__ NOW, don't wait for the water to get him. The truth obviously lies somewhere between Nathan20 and any number of others who want to give CPW 4-5 years to rebuild a program they perceive as bankrupt.
I don't believe it was that bad off talent wise, but rather that poor,__ no terrible coaching and game schemes have aggrevated confidence issues and made slightly less talented players vulnerable. I think most of these nearly two years of blowouts and 3 ugly wins is to be laid at the feet of D-2 coaches not ready for the size, speed and physicality of the Pac-10 and teams like ND. CPW had better recruit some coaches he can rely on to make the right calls or he'll go down with the ship. I just hope the Cougar Marching Band keeps playing on deck!

"We were an average pac 10 team in Doba's last year (5 years after Price left I should note)"

We went 3-6 in the Pac-10 and finished 7th. After his first season, Doba didn't have a single winning season nor finish any higher than 7th in the PAC-10 during his tenure. And we later find out those teams were also asleep at the switch regarding violations.
