Merry X-mas Cougs! Wishing all the best to you and yours this holiday season.
Wasn't really planning on posting anything today, but a nice surprise for coach Paul Wulff and the Coug coaches came on X-mas eve. Via breaking news out of Cougfan, none other than Bishop Sankey, a rising star running back from G-Prep in Spokane, has given a verbal commitment to WSU! Sankey is still a high school junior, so he is really a verbal commit for the signing class in 2011. But this is, as the recruiting honks say, a "great get" for coach Wulff.
Sankey is a 5-11, 190-lb running back with speed (4.4 in the 40), strength (already benches 325, squats 400) and incredible productivity on the GSL circuit (over 2000 yards rushing in the regular season and playoffs combined, averaging - get this - nearly 10 YARDS per carry!).
And yes, the kid is definitely getting attention! Per his bio from Cougfan, he's received all-state honors from the Seattle Times, Tacoma News Tribune and the Associated Press. And he has been on WSU's radar for some time, winning MVP of the WSU camp as a sophomore in 2008. And per this article from Cougfan, they've been on Sankey for a while and offered him early this year.
There is a cool website set up for him with photos and videos that you can view here. And yep, there's plenty of highlights of Sankey online via Youtube, but here's one of the better ones we could find (note the video quality is a little dark at times, but, yeah, you get the idea after seeing it!):
Big play, after big play, after big play. Homerun speed, moves, power, you name it he's got it. He even throws a long TD out of the wildcat formation! And all of this as a junior. Just a wonderful "get" to coach Wulff, coach Broussard who spent a lot of time on him, and the rest.

This is huge! With all these Spokane kids either at WSU or committed I think we should see about 20K from the Spokane area for every home game. Of course what I think and what people do are completely unrelated.

Unfortunately, it won't matter. If we're winning, people will come from all over the state. If we suck, the stadium will be empty.

Sankey caught me totally off guard written by BornCoug,

I didn't think Wulff had a shot at landing Sankey and had seen a lot of posts saying he was probably headed back to the midwest. To get this early of a committment is amazing. His video looks really good. Good size, speed, wiggle, and seems to have good vision.
Sankey is a great way to start next years class. I actually think having more Spokane kids will help to get Spokane a bit more involved but I don't think the city will ever really support WSU. It would help if we they would ever the freeway from Spokane to Pullman so the drive wasn't so difficult.

Success in the w/l department might still be fleeting in '10, but I I think we'll see a big improvement overall. But it still might even be '11 before we can begin to use "bowl" and "game" in the same sentence.
Meanwhile, SARK TO FLORIDA!?!? Start up the rumor mill! Weird with Urban Meyer, but the health issues must be larger than have been reported. The stress to win at Florida must be a 24/7/365 experience as a head coach!

I can't wait for him to officially sign his LOI with WSU in spring 2011 but it's nice that he verballed to WSU. We will need a power back when the graduation of Monty, Tardy, Chantz Staden will be done...but I won't be surprised if Stankey redshirts and then has an impact during the 2012 season.

This kid looks like the real deal. He is going to get a lot of attention from other schools over the next year. Maybe he will be the consolation for losing out on Johnathan Stewart.
